Big Brothers Big Sisters of Southeast Michigan partnered with the Detroit Zoological Society to support 25 Littles and their Bigs participation in a special Fall Educational Tour on Saturday, November 11. David Gakure and Mike Reed from the Detroit Zoological Society’s Education Department facilitated the group tour. Lisa Perez from the U.S. Forest Service started the event off with a quick learning session about how to use a compass. The group was also able to tour the very popular Penguin Conservation Center followed by the Wildlife Interpretive Gallery. (The Butterfly Garden was a huge hit for the Littles!)
Following these tours the Detroit Zoo Educational Team facilitated programming around fall foliage and changing seasons for our BBBS group. The Littles also heard about internships and volunteer opportunities that the Detroit Zoo offers to teenages. The Littles and Bigs made fall art creations to go along with the learning workshop about fall. Littles created impressive artworks of animals using fall foliage they found at the zoo.
Matches were able to conclude this special event with spending the rest of the day touring any of the habitats or features at the Detroit Zoo. Big Brothers Big Sisters of Southeast Michigan are very thankful for the Detroit Zoo providing this special education learning opportunity for our Littles and look forward to a spring 2024 event to see what is blooming at the Detroit Zoo.
