Big Brothers Big Sisters of Southeast Michigan Celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month

November 2024

In celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Southeast Michigan (BBBSSM) hosted an enriching event at the Detroit Institute of Arts that honored the cultural significance of the Ofrenda Altars.

This month-long observance, which took place from September 15 to October 15, culminated in a visit to special exhibits at the DIA, inlcluding ones that highlight the traditions surrounding the Day of the Dead (Día de Muertos).

Ofrendas are altars that hold cherished items in memory of lost loved ones. These displays typically feature favorite foods, drinks, mementos, and photographs, all beautifully arranged alongside sugar skulls, candles, flowers, and papel picado. The tradition serves to honor and celebrate the lives of relatives, friends, and community members who have passed away.

Jasmine Edwards, Volunteer Enrollment Coordinator, expressed the importance of this experience for the organization’s Littles, or youth mentees.

“I remember going to museums as a little girl and being amazed by all the history/stories, beautiful art, colors and textures,” Edwards said. “Having the opportunity to expose our Littles to the same thing – especially art that has people who reflect them, being created by people who also look like them is a wonderful experience that I’m happy to be a part of. Watching their faces light up, and their horizons expanding is why I do what I do!”

Mariel Hohenthaner, another staff member who attended the event, also witnessed the joy and cultural connection the exhibit provided. For additional insights or quotes, please reach out to her directly.

It was really awesome seeing our Littles discuss the exhibit, and hypothesize why certain items were on the ofrendas. The experience offered a beautiful moment of cultural appreciation for every age.

BBBSSM also passed out goodie bags after the DIA event filled with different baked goods from MexicanTown Bakery, a local bakery in Southwest Detroit.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Southeast Michigan remains committed to fostering cultural awareness and enriching experiences for its community members, ensuring that every child has the opportunity to learn, grow, and thrive.
