Brooklyn is a whirlwind of energy, a kind and silly 11-year-old with a contagious laugh. Her journey with Big Brothers Big Sisters began in the 2nd grade as a Lunch Buddy, where her bubbly personality quickly made her a favorite among staff and students alike. When the opportunity arose to be matched with a Big, Brooklyn’s excitement was palpable.
Enter Colleen, a compassionate and outgoing young woman. Having previously mentored two other Littles, Colleen was eager to share her time and support with a new match. From the moment they met, it was clear that Brooklyn and Colleen had a special connection. Their shared love of sports and a mutual appreciation for chocolate chip cookies quickly formed the foundation of their budding friendship.
Over the past year and a half, this dynamic duo has created countless unforgettable memories. They’ve explored their creative sides through painting, cheered each other on during softball games, and even volunteered their time to bring joy to others by making holiday cards. For Brooklyn, Lunch Buddies days have become a highlight of her week, filled with energetic games, heartfelt conversations, and the comfort of knowing Colleen is always there.
Brooklyn’s admiration for Colleen is evident in her words. She describes her Big as her “best friend,” a “safe person,” and someone she can always rely on. Colleen, in turn, finds immense joy in watching Brooklyn grow and thrive. As Colleen puts it, “The most rewarding part of being a Big is seeing Brooklyn’s smile.”
This match is a beautiful example of the power of mentorship. Brooklyn and Colleen’s story inspires us all to consider the impact we can make in the life of a young person.
