Big Brothers Big Sisters of Southeast Michigan was thrilled to participate in the Juneteenth Freedom Fest held on Sunday, June 16 at Eastern Market in Detroit. This vibrant celebration honored the day of liberation for African Americans in our country, providing an incredible opportunity for BBBSSEM to engage with the community, recruit new volunteers, and spread awareness about our mission of empowering youth through mentorship.
The atmosphere was filled with joy and unity as people celebrated history, culture, and community. BBBSSEM was heartened by the enthusiasm and support attendees showed as they learned about our mentorship program and the impact it has on the lives of young individuals. We connected with individuals from all walks of life and recruited 33 volunteer inquiries, including six BIPOC males interested in becoming potential mentors or Bigs. This was a significant achievement for us, highlighting a growing interest in local mentorship and affirming our belief that every mentorship opportunity created builds stronger, more resilient youth.
We were grateful for the opportunity to collaborate with various partners such as the City of Detroit, Detroit Branch NAACP, Juneteenth Jubilee, and many others. Together, we created a space where businesses, organizations, and community members could celebrate, connect, and inspire positive change. The location of the event, the Black Bottom Row of Shed 5, added significance to the day. As we gathered, we felt a deep connection to the history and heritage of the area, a reminder of the resilience and strength of the African American community, and a fitting backdrop for a celebration of freedom and unity.
Looking back on our participation in the Juneteenth Freedom Fest, we are filled with pride and gratitude. The event was not just a celebration; it was a reaffirmation of our commitment to empowering youth and building brighter futures. We are inspired by the connections we made, the stories we heard, and the impact we could create in just one day. As we continue our work, we carry with us the spirit of community, unity, and empowerment that was present at the Juneteenth Freedom Fest. We are grateful for the support of our volunteers, partners, and the community at large. Together, we can make a difference in the lives of young individuals and create a more inclusive and supportive environment for all.
