On July 25 at the Durfee Innovation Society in Detroit, a day of innovation, learning, and camaraderie unfolded as dozens of Ascent Cloud volunteers joined forces with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Southeast Michigan to host an exhilarating robotics event for Littles and their volunteers, or Bigs for a Day.
The event, a vibrant mix of excitement and discovery, began at 10:00 AM with registration and an engaging icebreaker, setting a warm and welcoming tone. A “Get to Know You Little Dice” Game proved to be perfect tools for allowing Littles and their “Bigs for a Day” from Ascent Cloud to get acquainted.
Site-Based Manager Joseph Yelick, instrumental in leading this initiative, highlighted the importance of such collaborations. “Events like these are crucial in providing our Littles with experiences that not only educate but also inspire. The enthusiasm from both the volunteers and the kids was palpable,” he remarked. “Our goal is to ignite curiosity and passion in these young minds. This event was about more than just robots; it’s about creating lasting memories and fostering a love for learning.”
West Matching & Match Support Manager Sam Tully-Sykes and Enhancements Coordinator Samuel Francey played key roles in spreading the word and ensuring a robust turnout, underscoring the significance of community support in the success of such initiatives. Their efforts were evident as the Dive Space buzzed with energy and anticipation.
For nearly a couple hours that day the robotics session took center stage. Ascent Cloud volunteers paired up with Littles to explore the wonders of robotics. With dozens of robots purchased for the event, each Little had a hands-on experience, building and programming their robots. For the younger participants under seven, working in teams with their older siblings ensured everyone had a fulfilling experience.
Michelle Slisinger, Ascent Cloud HR manager, emphasized the company’s commitment to community engagement after a 2023 adopt-a-family BBBS donation while spreading the love again through technology at this year’s event. “(I have) a passion for STEM especially STEM with littles and also in the city of Detroit and bringing technology here as a tech hub.”
Slisinger described the event as an “amazing experience” because the Detroit-based software company has a lot of young engineers and it was fun to watch them “blossom and grow” that day watching them mentor little kids.
“It’s definitely part of our core values to give back,” Slisinger said. “It’s definitely something we’re passionate about as a company is giving back, especially to the city of Detroit. I think it really inspires our engineers that everything has purpose and what they can bring everyday can bring more to everyone around them.”
Regarding building future BBBSSM mentorship relationships, Slisinger added that the more children get exposed to different parts of life through others, it can be easier for them to find their purpose and passion and she is “happy to be part of that goal.”
The practical demonstrations and interactive challenges were complemented by delicious pizza and drinks, adding to the day’s joy. One Little exclaimed, “This was the best day ever!” capturing the essence of the event.
As the event concluded, wrap-up activities encouraged reflection. Questions like “What was your favorite part about this project?” and “Why is it important to work with others as a team?” prompted insightful discussions, reinforcing the day’s learning.
In an era where technology shapes our future, events like these highlight the power of community and volunteerism. For the Littles, having a Big for a day—someone to guide, support, and inspire—can make all the difference. Ascent Cloud’s involvement showcased the profound impact of giving time and expertise, proving that together, we are indeed “Bigger Together.”
