Big Brothers Big Sisters of Southeast Michigan (BBBS) partnered with Wilderness Inquiry on Saturday, September 28, to bring the excitement of the Canoemobile to Belle Isle once again. In the morning, over 50 participants gathered at the Woodside Drive Shelter, ready to paddle and explore the natural beauty of Detroit’s waterways.
The event featured Wilderness Inquiry’s Canoemobile, a unique initiative that brings large 10-person canoes to cities across the country. The goal: to introduce people of all ages and experience levels to the joy of paddling and the rich ecosystems within their local rivers and lakes. For the second year, the Canoemobile stopped at Belle Isle’s Lake Okonoka, providing attendees with a one-hour paddling session guided by experienced instructors.
With local partners, including the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR) and the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS), the event was not only about adventure but also education. Youth and adults alike had the opportunity to learn about the ecology of the Detroit River, native wildlife, and the critical role of conservation efforts in maintaining Michigan’s waterways.
The day wouldn’t have been possible without the help of dedicated volunteers and staff. Joe, a longtime BBBS supporter, arrived early to assist BBBS’ Sam Francey and other team members in coordinating the event’s logistics. His support, along with other volunteers, ensured a smooth and successful day for all.
“Bringing the Canoemobile back to Belle Isle was incredible,” said Francey, Enhancements Coordinator at BBBS. “It’s not only about having fun on the water but about connecting with our local environment and each other. BIG thanks to our friends at Wilderness Inquiry for organizing yet another incredible event – we can’t wait for next year!”
This memorable day showcased BBBS’ commitment to offering unique, educational experiences that foster community connection and environmental stewardship. Keep an eye out for next year’s Canoemobile event—an adventure not to be missed!
